Second call tonight in a week asking to sign off on another sparks rewire as he ain't registered. Is it me or would you want to put your name to bob the builders work considering it comes back on you if the $#%t hits the fan?

Sorry if I offend but you must be smoking something if you would take ÂŁ80 quid or whatever to give them the paperwork they need considering you don't have a clue who wired it up although they are saying it was the sparky.

Not for me.

typo, I can spell 'AM'

The trouble with this whole thing is that whilst you might NOT want to do it, sure as eggs is eggs there's someone else out there who WILL do it. So logically, you might just as well have a ton in your pocket rather than theirs.

3 part form, you only sign for the I & T section, the builders spark signs for Design & Construction.....absolutely no difference in practice to a firm who uses subbies to do the work and then their QS signs it off.

Not saying it's right, just saying it's perfectly allowable.

Sorry mate. I cant agree with this.
This is like saying 'If you go past a shop window that is broken and there is a nice tv there, you might as well nick it, cause someone will.'

I would never sign off anyones work and think all sparks should be the same. this is another way of preventing the register of electricians we all want to see, if we ensure only qualified registered sparks carry out rewires and certify them then the cowboys will eventually be removed from the system, Doing the 80 quid job is an insult to the trade IMHO, some no mark from the pub gets the money and we qualified tradesmen get to earn 80 quid and take the blame.

I,ve been to a mates supermarket and the so called spark who wired it has made a right mess,I had my doubts about his capabilities from the start, having had one or two conversations with him, unfortunately it would seem he was a house basher who having seen work in that area dry up has gravitated into commercial work.obviously he has no experience in this field and some of his work is appalling.some of the stuff is so basic, joints in cables made with stripblock, not in enclosures, cables just lying on the suspended ceiling, the list goes on.Taking a job like this as an example I think anyone would be hard pressed to locate all the problems, and be able to issue any form of cert without fear of a comeback.
I suppose it,s all down to knowing the work is right, for example if you knew the spark who had done the work and could be assured it was right then ok,but just ticketing a job done by joe bloggs and you could be entering a minefield. After all you could guarantee that if anything did go wrong it would be your head the customer would be after, not the person who did the job originally.

I have been asked a few times, classic was, ive just had my restaurant re fitted and the electrician cant give me a certificate... a friend from yonder maybe, but I have had a few people ask of late, and no I always say on your bike.

No it's not, because theft is theft whoever's hand goes through the window and the law clearly states that.

I didn't say that I liked it, just that it's allowed.

The problem also arises with the changes to Part P that came in this year that say that you can carry out work and get a 3rd party to notify it.....only problem with this being they haven't decided how this will work or who is allowed to notify!

The whole system is a shambles, my LABC either don't know or don't care because I have rung them a few times to say I know of John Smith who is doing notifiable jobs but isn't notifying them.....their response was it's not our problem.....
