I liked the old AVO, I buy cheap chinese ones but only for quick testing capacitors on refrigeration starters as you can see the needle drop as it drains the battery , as to needles after a few years of chemo etc bloods 4 times a day and drips of all wierd concoctions a blood test once a month is a real treat

thhe battareies are readily available . 1 is a standard D type, the other is a 15V . generally rebuilt with button cells.unless it's an AVO7 which uses a 4.5V cycle lamp batt.in stead of the 15V.

There should be a place for an analogue multi meter in every electricians test kit, all that's required is a cheap/budget model. Not so sure i'd carry an old AVO model 8 or similar meter around in the back of a van though, not unless it's in a well padded compartment. Far too good a meter to have it rattling around on a shelf to my mind!!

heres the buggers i used in the navy they were very rugged and accurate
vintage simpson vom | eBay

Used plenty of those Simpson series 2 and 5 multimeters over the years. They are basically the American equivalent of the UK's AVO's, both makes were good reliable multimeters in there day Neither of them had an accuracy better than 1 to 1 1/2% though.
