Managed to smash my multimeter today, I'm not that angry as it was cheap and old, but I do now need a new one.

I've been looking on the interweb and there's a smorgasbord to choose from and I haven't a clue which are good and which are bad???

Any advice as to which one might be best to go for? I'm willing to spend up to ÂŁ100-ÂŁ120 if there are any above the usual ÂŁ15-ÂŁ20 price range that are worth spending the extra money on :)

Cheers chaps!

this is a very good one but its a bit pricey the best part is it is extremely sturdy
regardless of the brand you choose i would be more concerned with its accuracy and dependability
anyhow there are more listed on the page.

Morning Damian, what are you using it for? What units of measurement do you need?

Not many renowned manufacturer's sell analogue multimeters anymore, which is a shame. Kewtech (Robin in old money) do a nice analogue multimeter for around the ÂŁ50 mark. It looks like it also comes in a hard carry case with a test lead compartment as well:

PM me and I'll give you a very best price.

Simpson 260 is a good meter but not worth that sort of money & without a solid case it won't last long out on site. You can often pick them up on the bay for ÂŁ15 - 20, the kewtech meter shown should last you for years & as it's made by Kyoritsu will be good quality.

I like Kyoritsu instruments a lot. I have several that I've had for more than 15 years so I'd highly recommend them. I haven't ever owned a Dilog tester so I can't say if the price difference is a fair reflection of the difference in quality or not.

what ever analog meter you pick choose one that has the mirror strip in the scale face.
looking straight on where you dont see the needle reflection will give the most accurate reading.

What will the ÂŁ50 Kewtech give me that the ÂŁ20 Dilog won't? Is the quality and accuracy that much better?

Ranges appear to be pretty similar but the kewtech looks to be sturdier, comes with a quality set of leads which are easily replaceable & has higher input impedance. Personal opinion: I would'nt feel safe reading mains voltages with the di log.

Those are a reasonable meter, I bought 1 about a year ago to keep in the car. Great all through the summer but as soon as the damp weather came along went up the ding, even though I kept it in a padded case slightest bit of damp & it's had it. After stripping it down & drying it out for the third time, I just leave it in the workshop now.

I want my old AVO 8 back.......was big...was bulky...but never let me down....!!

Avo 8's are the dogs, I bought an immaculate mark 5 a few months back for ÂŁ20 including the original leather case & leads. That baby stays locked safely in the workshop, the other meter I like for fault finding is the Metrix mx1. Had mine for about 12 years now & still as good as when I bought it, only problems is the price of a new 1 will make your eyes water.
