Hi, I'm another wannabe sparky and after some advise.
About me:
I'm 28 years old live in Nottingham and currently a HGV driver. The hours are long and the job gets worse year on year, I have 1 year old baby at home and 2 step kids and followed my old mans footsteps into the driving game as I was pushed into it due to 'the money'. I work 60-70 hour weeks and spend a lot of it sleeping in my truck away from home so the money isn't bad(30k+) but its not for me and I want a home life with the family so although I don't know what sparkys earn in Nottingham I would of thought the lifestyle would be a lot better suited to family life??
Anyway I've done some research and my head hurts from all the numbers lol I have found a 2330 course at my local college and it's ÂŁ550 a year 2 evenings a week for 31 weeks and I think it's a 3 year course does that sound right?
If I get on the course(need to pass an assessment first any tips on how/where to revise from would be nice) and I do the course I assume I will do level 3? And then I need to do a 17th and nvq3 to get JIB card is that right?
I would like to think at some point in the next year I can afford to drop my wages to gain experience in the field as I can't afford to drop to apprentice wages even 'if' I was lucky enough to be offered enough.
So I'd like advise on how long it would take if I pass the relevant courses on time and what I will be looking at with an already busy work schedule. I'm already looking for another job and going onto nights is a possibility to ensure I don't miss any classes. Is there an end in sight? My g/f has been really supportive throughout and really encouraged me despite the fact we might be skint for a couple of years. Seems a million miles away at the minute but I'm up for grafting!
Many thanks
Ollie.
