Hello.

Im really interesting in becoming a sparky and am trying to work out the best route through gaining the required qualifications. I'll be re training and trying to do this in conjunction with holding down my current job as an electronics technician. The reasons behind this change are too many to try and explain but the bottom line is that I'm aiming to get the qualifications to allow me to make domestic repairs and installations. It seems like minefield of information when looking in from the outside as to what is required and because of my age (42) and the fact Im having to keep on working my current job for as long as possible before making the switch.
im hoping there's someone else who might have re trained later in life who might help to provide an insight on the best way forward, or someone with lots of experience in the industry who could explain clearly where I need to get to.

thanks very much for you time

You will get much advice on here some regarding the "quick route" looked down on by many and then there's the long expensive route.

Ok what's the quickest route to be a DI.

1. Take a short course Part P type of thing.
2. 17th Edition 2382
3. 2392 electrical testing

Total training about 12 working days provided you pass!!

You can then register for say NICEIC provided you have 2 projects 1 canbe at home one needs seperate address). Schemes need to include:-
CU change
New circuits

You'll need to have set up trading have ÂŁ2 m Public Liability Insurance and your own tools including testing gear.

I'm not advocating the quick route as experience is everything!!!

However hope this helps

Regards

Thanks very much! That's really good information.. I had no idea it could happen so quick. It wasnt my real intention to drastically short cut, and i realise there's nothing beats experience. I am though trying to get it done without spending too much time back at college. I'll have a look at the courses you mention, and take it from the there. Really appreciate the guidance. Thanks again

You can't without being considered a micky mouse electrician.

It's alright for going S/E (well it's not, but...) If you ever struggle for work and want a regular employer...very very few get employed with the Electrical Trainee certificate. Not thought highly of at all in the industry.

Bottom line is, it's not worth it imo.

The 'Long' route is the cheapest! Have you checked the prices of the Tech Cert at college etc versus the muppet course sold by the electrical mafia?
