I would love to run my cables in routed channels like that, behind the skirting boards. Its a real pity that prescribed areas do not include 'toe level'! That said ... I imagine that working at that level will be hard on knees and back!

Our railway wagon repair shop definitely was’t in the US. A different century maybe.

was that in the days of lead sheathed cable, when plumbers were plumbers and not just plastic jointers.

Still done today. One of the last real skills in the trade that could be called an art.

I hope whoever did this was proud of himself.

I'm sure it wasn't! I've just never come across reference to knob and tube being used here, I thought we only had cleat wiring here. It's probably exactly the same thing that I've just never made the connection between.

I've just bought a couple more books which you may interest you, if you don't have them already.
WT Henley's 'practical cable jointing' (1940) and
'General information' volume 8 (1946) and volume 10 (1959)
The former shows how to terminate all types of lead sheathed cables in to all of their glands and equipment of the time including the various types of hot pour compounds etc.
The latter has current ratings for lead, varnished cambric and suchlike cables from the IEE and Lloyds register.

Would the plates on the cleats or the bolts need to be non-ferrous in that?

I’ve seen that done before, the front plates would be aluminium.
