Any ideas

Is it a passive house? The heat recovery system only recovers about 80% of the heat which is already in the house. Still needs a form of heating. Most of the eco houses I've been in use a ground source heat pump or solar used to heat an underfloor heating system.

Passiv haus - usually the form of heating would be bodies ( each person ~ 3kW) and solar gains through glazed areas.

They are trying to make it a passive house. They don't want radiators or underfloor.

Hi Worcester , is it really 3kw per person !?
I saw some research a few years back , that was for cows while they are in the parlour being milked , and it suggested they give out 1kw each .
Now this was a few years ago now and no doubt the way they process the data is differently / more effectively done , but that is one hell of a uplift when you take into account the size of a cow .
I have no doubt you are correct , but thought I would just mention that anyway . :)

@JD6400, have to admit it was a guess, turn out it was one of those urban myths that I just propoagted :)

Bit of investigation turns out that in architectural planning for solar space heating systems the rule is 100W per at rest person :(
The same figure is used by event planners when looking at heating and cooling requirments in venues.

1) Insulate

75mm of celotex / kingspan will reduce the U-value to 0.3, floors, walls, upper floor ceilings. Argon filled UPVC double glazing, heat requirement will be 1/5 to 1/4 of what it was...

MVHR / Heat recovery pumps usually recycle the heat from kitchens and bathrooms

MVHR with a GSHP 'coil' to preheat incoming air at the inlet. Do you know what sort of airtightness they're going to achieve? What sort of windows etc?

Do you know if they actually want to certify it as a retrofit Passivhaus or just to match the standard?
