UK Any reason why sockets can't be installed on a horizontal surface?

As title suggests, is there any regulation that prevents sockets from being installed on a horizontal surface?

Think floor sockets but installed on a flat plasterboard surface which forms a recess shelf. For clarification, I'm not doing this myself, I just wanted some information before I go looking for an electrician to come round and discuss.

As long as the sockets and plug tops can't be accidentally trodden on, then I see no issue with what you describe

Only issue might be objects, dust or liquids flowing into the socket holes… but domestic settings should be ok.

Have seen sockets lying on top of kitchen units for extractor hoods… 20-30 years off dust on top.


Have also seen a DIY job where the guy built the shelves as he went… now can’t remove the socket for testing as the shelf above is too close.
(For tv sky box etc)

too 21st C. slap in a couple of metalclads.

Thanks, it's approx 900mm from floor level so no chance of that happening!

I'm framing and boarding the media wall and shelves myself, and have opted for a small redesign so there's enough room to fit the sockets I want normally but against the sides of the shelves so job done.

Now to book electrician for getting it all wired up

One could argue that debris can fall in them when flat, and look to use floor sockets with sprung covers
