Hi all, I'm looking for help in going about tracking the last know location of a mobile phone - not because I've lost one, but because on a 100% serious level it may provide a valuable clue into the death of a friend recently and the police seem reluctant to follow it up. Any PM's much appreciated.

Thanks, Rock.

Thanks for the reply, and the question is understandable. The person in question was killed in an RTA under very strange circumstances in the sense that it is a complete mystery as to why he was where he was at that time and where he was going, and there is no account of the previous few hours either, although he should have been elsewhere. The police have only gone so far as to check the call logs and satisfy themselves that he wasn't making a call whilst driving and don't seem interested in anything else - which leaves a widow and two children hanging for eternity on not knowing why it happened. The phone wasn't at the scene but was still ringing two days later until presumably the battery died.

That’s an awful situation to be in and totally understand why you would want the triangulation carried out.

The other problem is the police have to justify why they carry out a triangulation due to privacy laws etc. If it is a case of a vulnerable / suicidal missing person, then justification is routinely easy; however carrying out a triangulation following a fatal RTC when the deceased is at scene would be slightly more challenging. (Especially if there is no evidence of a crime)

As far as I’m aware, only the police can authorise triangulation (without the consent of the person in question) and therefore you are very unlikely to succeed trying alone. I think your best option would be to speak to the Family Liaison Officer and see what avenues he / she can explore on your behalf.

HTH.

and not the MOD ponty?.....
after all isn`t triangulation the fundemental means of pinpointing a target.....Uboat or otherwise?....

I sympathise with you, and cant offer any help to speak of. I dont suppose the mobile was on contract in another name to the deceased? they may be able to get the info. I know how triangulation works in navigation from my aircraft days, and i cant see mobiles being any different, it all works like a satnav in the car. The phone sends a signal out, and this is received by several satellites, the more satellites, the more accurate the location, the signal takes longer to reach each satellite, and the software can constantly work out the exact position of the device at any given time by analysing the times, this can also be tracked, and the history of movements traced as well.

Hi, not sure if helps but if it was a modern smartphone, or any decent phone the gps is usualy on and if the right apps were istalled it would of kept a log. I have one where i could track my phones previous locations via its gps records.

Most tracking is now done via GPRS/GPS, it can still be done by using the phones paging signal & triangulation between cell sites. As said the more sites the better your chances of a close hit on the phone, if the phone has been dropped inside a cell sites coverage area & not in a hand off area (where 2 or more sites coverage overlap), then unfortunately GPS is your best option as you will only be able to say the phone is with in a specific radius to the cell site tower.

You can try contacting 02 to see if they can do a locstat, but don't hold your breath.

Anoher thought if it was a blackberry you can contact RIM and see if the blackberry safe app is running?
