Hi,

For your information, saw this tonight, brand new iPad got fried when the charger went bang.

i guess the moral is switch off when not in use.

Definitely a genuine Apple product, he only purchased the iPad from currys a couple of weeks ago. It was identical to my apple charger and same markings etc, but yes it was brand new. The cover and innards actually landed on the rug 12" away.

It might be worth checking to see if there was a recall but if it's only a few weeks old and was purchased from a large department store you shouldn't have any issues getting the entire thing replaced under its warranty/guarantee.

Got two original in here, both have a little apple logo just under the earth pin.
Yours says "emerson network power" made in China.

It's definitely a counterfeit charger, the location of the "safety mark" text is an instant giveaway.

At least they've now learnt how to spell safety.


I suspect your "new" apple toy is a reboxed customer return, the customer (perhaps deliberately) opted to return a 99p charged with it.

+2 on counterfeit. The writing is too dark for the genuine thing. It is barely readable on the real thing.

I've seen this on discussion before, might not be completely the same situation but the exploded wires look the same:

Even know peeps say you can swap chargers around. I have heard of problems when charging an Ipad with an IPhone charger due to the fact that the iPad requires more power. If your using an iPhone 5w charger to charge an Ipad you might get a temperature increase that combined with ambient temperature could cause bang!

Good chance it's a genuine charger. Had the same problem a couple of years ago after buying a brand new iPad, the charger exploded in the middle of the night. After returning it to the Apple shop it turned out to be a software fault and easily fixed. Fortunately there was no lasting damage.
