hi,

im on an apprenticeship atm with a company and everything is fine. however a new guy joined not long ago on a trial period. he told me because that will extend past September he wont be able to start his apprenticeship until next year. then he told me he was being paid somewhere near apprentice wage.

the type of work he is doing is almost completely unsupervised second fixing on a production line with a mix of unqualified, qualified and apprentice sparks.

is it legal for his boss to pay him less than minimum wage for a whole year becouse he expects too put him on an apprenticeship after?

thanks for reading.

thats a bit off, i joined and started apprentaship in july.

its the college stuff thats the issue.

the boss will be doing it so he only has to pay him ÂŁ2.50 an hour.

after the first year it goes up a lot

When i started as a 1st year i was on over 230 sterling a week, the union had an agreement that 1st years got 47.5% of the qualified mans rate, a 2nd year got 60%, a 3rd year got 75% and a 4th year got 90%, however i very nearly took a different job which was 90 sterling a week working on site, when the chance of the factory job came up and with those wages i jumped at the chance

if he's not on a formal apprenticeship with an agreed training programme attached to it, then he's not an apprentice and can not legally be paid at anything below the standard national minimum wage for his age group.

Just print this out and take it in, the guy is either an apprentice for the year with training programme attached or he gets paid NMW.
