hi,

im on an apprenticeship atm with a company and everything is fine. however a new guy joined not long ago on a trial period. he told me because that will extend past September he wont be able to start his apprenticeship until next year. then he told me he was being paid somewhere near apprentice wage.

the type of work he is doing is almost completely unsupervised second fixing on a production line with a mix of unqualified, qualified and apprentice sparks.

is it legal for his boss to pay him less than minimum wage for a whole year becouse he expects too put him on an apprenticeship after?

thanks for reading.

im on half that and others are not on that much

While I'd say you've definitely got the **** end of the stick I don't think I should be earning less. The onus is on you're company to pay more, if no one took these low paying jobs they'd realise they have to pay more, you're not doing the industry any favours by taking low wages.

i started when i was 18 and the only firm that would take me on so.

im leaving as soon as i qualify, i would be better off stacking shelfs

Could be worse, I was on £9-4/- a week when I started. Mum wanted £5 of that. Dad gave it me back and more beside.
