I've recently been offered an electrical apprenticeship. However I received my contract in the post today and I saw that my wage is going to be ÂŁ2.65. I'm 19 years of age and have rent, car insurance etc to pay for so I was wondering am I expecting too much? Or as I'm thinking is this not enough?

PS... I know it is within the minimum wage for a first year apprentice I was just hoping for a little more considering my age.

THANKS!

Thanks for all your help guys... I'll phone them up tomorrow and explain my situation and I will see if there's anything they can do for me. If not then never mind! I need the training there isn't much else I can do!

The only plus of that wage is you will get nearly 100% pay rise in year 2.
Not many people are getting that sort of pay rise...

not always true.

im definatly leaving my current company as soon as finished aprentaship (done half off my portfolio)

no ones pay ever increases at all and its low, a guy started an apprenticeship with us and i think was on ÂŁ20 a day

ive been there nearly a year and same pay as when i started!!!

He will get the pay rise because it's the NMW. He is 19 so he starts at ÂŁ2.65 an hour for the first year then it goes to ÂŁ4.98 an hour.

It is the brown end of the stick. Get year one out if the way, and your rate will go up with big bump, at least double. But i agree ÂŁ2.65 for anyone is poor, and i dont know how those who pay it can hold their heads up.

Cheers............Howard

That is terrible I was on more working as a waiter in a hotel when I was 16! But needs must now a days, slum it till you are qualified mate!

You would still earn more today working as a waiter in a hotel at 16. For some reason the government think that apprentices deserve over ÂŁ1 an hour less than those who aren't training at the same time as working.

The thing is though in ten years time that waiter's wage won't have gone up very much whereas the apprentice will then be well qualified and experienced and so can reasonably expect to be earning a lot more.

Totally agree think I started as a pup on ÂŁ3 an hour, had no kids or car back then though. But the experience gained was priceless, worked with loads of different sparks at the firm and sub contractors and learnt how the trade worked. 10 years later and I love my job and am still learning everyday.
