have a quick look on her are the rates

i work for sec and was getting about 550 a month and was working weekend also at 70 a day wen i wanted to work

now in my second year i am geting 930 a month

and my apprentaship lasts for 4 years and then i have to take my am2 to get qualified and any other testing ect i want to become pat p

but i think is well worth it

but boys jobs are noo good crawling in lofts oftt god noo

When i started I was on SJIB (shop rate) of about ÂŁ3.30ish an hour, increased to ÂŁ4/5 an hour in second year and now ÂŁ8ish in third year until I pass my trade test.

SJIB pay rates

It also has the rates for adult apprentices on that link.

I had a weekend job for a while when I was in first year to top up my wages (for Christmas presents.)

When I started in Feb 08 with no experience I was on ÂŁ6.70 an hour. This year it went up to ÂŁ9 an hour. The perks I get are my own van with fuel, all work t shirts and trousers paid for, breakfast every Friday:), plenty of overtime, paid at time and a half/ double time. I like to think I am fairly competent. I do fairly large installs on my own, all my own testing work, including periodics and fault finding. I supply most of my own tools and testing gear, though if I am careful I can get a few tools on my bosses account;). At the end of the month I take home ÂŁ13/1400, though of course I get a load of private work and I cant remember a time when I have had to buy my own cable and parts for these jobs as my van is always well stocked. I am 28 with three children, the only qualifications I have are the city and guilds ones and 16th edition which in all took me three years to get, I dont think I will bother with NVQ 3 and AM2 at the moment, just looking to do 17th and 2391. The first year was hard, but it was worth it in the end (sorry about the long post)

You can't qualify in two years.

Not sure about that mate. I did 2330 level 2 FULL TIME at college sept 08 till June 09, start my 2330 Level 3 this wk till June 09. I get a quickfire 17th at the end of the course. Been employed for all of it.

Fair enough, I wont have 2391 or a lot of experience so won't be able to certify, but ill still call myself a qualified electrician whatever anyone says

super there is a huge difference in being qualified and Compitent and a true spark is compitent. That is the bit that takes time and i feel is main bennifit of a full apprenticeship is. doing the collighe stuff in 6-8 months is fine but on a site wher you have to adapt and think latteraly that isnt tought in any college.

Yeah although it didnt sound that way I do fully appreciate that mate and in no way will I think I am the finished article. Just trying 2 make the point that you can, in theory, be qualified in 2 years!

Heck if you've got the money you can be more qualified than your average spark in 8 weeks, not that ud have a fliipin clue what you were doin!! (but thats for another thread hey)

Cheers

IMHO

being an electrican on paper and being an electrical are two entirly different thuings.

A couple of years ago I was working for a local hose bashing company doing new builds (houses and flats)

I was askesd to do the meter and tails for two of the blocks of flats.

The company electricans had never see anyone make there own bends for cable tray or uise a hicky bar to bend cables to make neat sweeps on the cables.

In my experience you learn the basics during the apprentership and once you know the basics than you start to learn about this industry. Spending a couple of years at college learning about volt drop calculations, Power Factor corrections and the equivient of a couple of weeks practical training is not enough.

Once again IMHO

Colleges who train people to be electricans in a couple of years and think that is enough to start them on the way to being a safe competent tradesmen have another thing coming.

I'm not even going to start about fault finding skills

Richard

Again, I do appreciate what u lads are saying and I do agree!! All im sayin is that it is possible 2 qualify in 2 years thats all. You probably won't be very good, fast, be able to fault find, all those fun things!

The whole competency vs qualifications is a totally different argument in my book.

Just out of interest tho, is it possible to join a notifying scheme without qualifications?? Say you could pass the assessment and had the relevant insurances etc, but no certificates/qualifications?

Cheers
