Is anybody else finding it diffucult to find an apprentice. Were in Prestatyn, North Wales and really struggling to find people intrested! Spoke to the local colleges, and about 10 lads who are looking for jobs, none even bothered to send a CV in! Were offering commercial, industrial and testing and lots of it but they dont seem intrested! Or is this just the kind of lads that are going through college now, happy to work in tesco part time?

We're looking to take on an apprentice at the moment and giving a lad a trial for a few weeks, he's done some weekend work etc at Homebase / BQ but when it actually comes to manual labour its like your putting a gun to their head, I'm tired/it's to heavy all the excuses come out, do you really want this opportunity? Then trying to get him to remove his earphones from the iphone he has listening to music is a chore in itself, what is wrong with the youth of today?? Not trying to tarnish every youngster with that statement by the way

If that is the way he acts when on a work trial that will be the way he acts if you give him the job,get shot of this lazy numpty and there are many other young lads out there with the right attitude.

I know your right but was trying to give him the benefit and correct his ways, another week or so to improve then will be looking elsewhere.

theres a lad that comes out with us for a bit of site experience...
now, he`s a nice enough lad but how i wish he`d put his chuffin phone down for more than 2 mins.
everytime i turn round there he is...tapping away on his phone...
he even attempted to fish cables through with one hand...whilst texting with the other...
that was early last week....
it can be really frustrating....especially when you want to get it done and move on...

To the ni guy , don't know if you need to be 18 to be self employed , but get utr number ,csr crd and own hand tools and drill, and transport needs to be getting lined up even tho you need to be earning to put in place.. Keep eye out on gumtree... That's where I got my new start last week...

yep....
lay down some ground rules...
phone at breaktimes.....apart from that its confiscated....
they will get used to it...
but you would have to keep re-affirming it regularly....otherwise it slips back into the old ways....

Just taken on my first apprentice last week.... 2 week trial to start with.

He's been helping out other local sparks an odd day here and there, just completed year one at college.

Think I may have been very lucky seems a bit of a lucky dip out there:

Great lad, good attitude, mega keen, punctual, no sight of mobile/smokes until break time, good with customers, can second fix to a good standard... the list goes on.

Having him around for the last week almost saved us a day. Worth every penny, a good investment for the business and I don't mind spending the extra time to train someone like that :smile5:

WTF is wrong? When I was an apprentice if I hadn't pulled my weight and did what I was told when I was told I'd have gotten a bloody clip. Now I know that in these wonderful politically correct days that sort of thing is frowned upon (and rightly so) but surely if you spell out the ground rules then all these complaints about young uns and phones etc would never happen.
I was on a job a few weeks back with a member of here and there was an apprentice there, I told him from the off no phone, no arsing around. Do what I want you to when I want you to do it and we'll get along fine. Plus you'll learn something.
