Gktssm

Hi,

I have been to two interviews but they turned me down because of my age. They said we are looking someone up to 24. I feel like no body will ever give me a chance. Everyone needs someone with experience, but where do we get experience from? Feeling distress.:sad_smile:

Hi Gktssm,

Dont give up mate there are companies around that take on over 24's. I'm 39 (IT background) & have recently been offered an apprenticeship with Clarkson Evans, no ones mentioned any costs for me to pay? Just waiting for a start date now.

Michael

good luck to you, ill be out of my time in april (hopefully if i pass am2 then)

be prepared for it to take 3-4 years. i did level 2-3 (in two years) and then have been doing my nvq since (started july 2012 officially) have a look through registered contractors in your area on the schemes websites

i called quite a few on that list and after doing work for one i eventually got an apprentaship with a mate of his.

if you do pay for it yourself bbe prepared to spend at least ÂŁ1000 a year on the tech certs then i dont know how much the nvq is (the full nvq diploma is cheaper)

Thanks mate, hope fully i ll find in the near future.

Excuse my ignorance but wht do you mean by tech cert?
the industry recognised apprenticeship contains
level 2 technical certificate
level 3 technical certificate
level 3 nvq (work based logbook)
am2 test at the end.

when i did mine it was the city and guilds 2330 but im not sure what its replacement is called now 2365 i think but im not sure.

bassically the tech cert is theory at college with some tests.

Ok, ya thts right. I mentioned in my previous post tht i have completed 2365 level 2&3, in jan i ll do the 17th ed. I paid everything nd i dnt expect any employer to pay for my nvq.. So i m prepared for tht but i just need to get somewhere.
Anyway thanks

the problem is if you can only get on the 2357 nvq you will need to do the bridging course (no need to turn up and study, 10mins before the exam is enough)

its a joke really

what does pv stand for
what colour is grey water pipes etc.
how deep is recommended for a bore hole, not that difficult as its multiple choice as well.

i had 10mins before a lecture before exam and got one wrong, even lecturer didnt have a clue on the depth as it varies

Didn't say you did but you actually have to be doing something within the industry to be able to complete the nvq, not much chance if your stacking shelves at tesco for example

I know you didn't. What i was trying to emphasise, is that if you look for an apprenticeship at that age, you are unlikely to get one. Why even look, when the wages are so low anyway?

Much better to pay for your courses while working as a mate on much better money.

The difference in wages over the (let's say) 3 years, far far out weighs the outlay for the courses.

Let me give you an example.

Before I had the job I am in now, I was with an agency doing a new hospital. I was on ÂŁ14 an hour as a spark. Now if I hadn't paid ÂŁ800 to do the AM2, I would have been on that job anyway as a mate on ÂŁ9 an hour. That's ÂŁ5 an hour difference.

So on a 40 hour week, that's ÂŁ200 a week more. That's ÂŁ800 a month. I was there for two months, so really, my outlay for the AM2 was paid for in one month, and the second month I was ÂŁ800 up.

Now multiply that scenario week in, month in, year in....

Have I really 'paid' for ANY of the courses I have done? No. I'm quids in all the way to the bank.

I got away with it at 24 yrs old. Never could understand why a company would rather hire some attitudey teenager who gets hammered on the weekends and comes in hungover, then someone who is older and is therefore probably more reliable.

Can anyone clarify why this is out of interest?

yes if there under 18 they dont pay anywhere near as much if at all for the training and they can pay them a lot less.

The current minimum wage rate for an apprentice is ÂŁ2.73 per hour.

This rate applies to apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
