[ElectriciansForums.net] Are my notches big enough?

Found this beauty today, a 5 inch notch in a 6 inch joist.

It wasn’t me!

I felt sorry for the homeowner - and remember finding the exact same thing under my bathroom floor years ago.

Seen three 6" joists reduced to 2" across 800mm to allow a shower tray to sit flush with the tiled floor once. The kitchen ceiling below had a noticeable dip in it.
Plonkers !

Ok chaps and chappesses. How would you fix the problem without replacing the joist? I’d look at cutting a new block of wood to fill the notch and then fitting some sort of bracing plates that overlap some distance either side of the notch. Would even look at Acroing up the joist slightly prior to securing if there was any sag.

Yes, I agree..."sistering" would be the way to go to fix that...jack up, double the joists either side, and run steel plates either side with bolts through at about 50mm apart.
you don't need timber if fixing steel pates, so your brigantine is safe...... for now.
