Hi

I’m a plasterer/ Renderer at the moment, 20years experience so no youngster, I’m thinking about re training to either aim for electrician or gas, what’s peoples thoughts on the short courses that’s available? And if they are good to go on? Any advice would be appreciated

I’m 6’1, so a short electrician course is no good to me …. 😆

From previous discussions on the forum, I think the short course only give you enough to become a “domestic installer” Which, although still called an electrician, you wouldn’t get the same practical experience as a 4 year apprentice route.

Usually they promise the earth and deliver very little. The forum is replete with stories of being ripped off. Industry entry requirements have been strictly upgraded and now you need a level 3 with portfolio and AM2. You cannot be entered into a competent person scheme without meeting these requirements. Have a look at the link below which shows what exactly is needed. It is doable but short courses, unless you are very lucky and careful, I think you will be wasting your money.
Read it carefully before embarking on action to getting qualified. As to gas, maybe the plumbers forum?

A good friend of mine was a gym manager for over 20 years retrained as a gas safe installer after covid struck which took him around 2 months and cost him well over 2 grand. that said he just turned over £70k in his first full year as a sole trader so well worth it

That's a pretty good investment then!

Turnover isn't profit though. A gas boiler install a week, 40 weeks a year, could easily be 50k+ of materials. 70k turnover now looks not so great.

The guy who services our boiler retrained and set out in a professional manner. It doesn't matter what way you cut it up, all my mind's eye can see is him doing 10 simple services each day at £60 a pop.

Cost me a grand to get my gas boiler relocated from garage to utility room. One new hole for the vent and a bit of copper pipe. Apparently that’s the going price. Not quite a days work for one man.

There was a gas fitter on youtube reckons he could do 13-15 boiler services a day and make £1500 per day on a good day
That is seriously good money no matter who you are
