They sound like arseholes. £220 is nothing though. Cut yer losses and move on. If they hassle you for money tell em to F off.
Think yourself lucky. I had a very similar situation about 5 years ago and got knocked £2000.

Thanks for all the input and help, it really helps to get other opinions and suggestions on the matter.

As it stands, I've spoken to them about it and it looks like this may be resolved without the need for further action, but I will update when I know it's finished.

The worst part is, I worked hard for them, started early, finished late when needed, drove long distances and rarely got money for fuel (average 250 miles a month), alot of parking costs out my pocket, etc etc for not great money. The problems they have come up with, all took place around 3 months ago and it's only last week they chose to make a problem with them. They knew all about them at the time and were happy to carry on, and one was a job I had to correct a mistake someone else made!

Anyway, time will tell.

Sailor48, you describe the way I worked for them, labour only, basically like employed, but self employed.

Dave and farm, I feel sorry for you, and I agree it's not as bad as it could have been. It's more the frustration that it was just out of spite and the worry that they wanted money from me!

Trouble with sueing companies is that you can get black listed by others when they hear about it, and the company you had the trouble with could tell others they socialise with too, I'm glad you sorted it, not worth arguing over 220 quid TBH, 2,200 and yes I wouldn't let it go, a lot of these larger companies have social gatherings with others and even though you did nothing wrong you could end up losing out, now a lot of guys here won't agree with my view about the 220 you were owed and they would take them to court regardless, thats fair enough and I understand their point of view, but in my view it is just pointless persuing it, having chatted to them and resolved it, you did it the right way, well done, I'm pleased for you., Usually the small man loses against the big guy, this time you won the day by the sound of things and it didn't get messy.

If they have been deducting you 20% under CIS they should be sending you a statement of your deductions every month. IF they have not then ask them for it. You should also have UTR (Unique Tax Reference) which they will be paying your 20% into. this number IS NOT your NI number. It is however given to you by HMRC.

If you do not have a UTR, or have not given it to them they could be taking 20% of your money and keeping it. Meaning when you go to pay your tax bill next year you will be very short of money in your tax account!

Remember the 20% they deduct is yours not thiers! They should be paying it into your tax account with the HMRC on your behalf!
