Need to contact a mod actually as whenever I click on private messages or profile it takes me to somebody elses.

[ElectriciansForums.net] Artificial 3 phase.

While we're on old books, this little cookie is guaranteed to cure anyone's insomnia.

1957 and it's as good as new!

There were ways to run a 3 phase system without the box of frogs. It’s a bit weird and not very efficient, but it worked. I tried it. The pilot motor needs to be about 15 to 20% KW of the largest motor.
The pilot motor would have to be started by spinning it by hand. Once several motors are running on the system the pilot motor can be stopped

I saw a similar set up as described by Tony, except this setup had a small single phase 'pony motor' to save having to start it by hand with a two way switch between the pony motor and the pilot motor.

Apparently (within reason) the more three phase motors you add/run, the more efficient the system becomes, as each motor adds to the generating effect.
This setup was used in a wood working shop.

All interesting stuff!

Once several motors are up and running it’s possible to stop the pilot motor. Never tried it on the rig we had set up in the workshop. We only did it to kill boredom, 6 electricians looking for something to do is bound to end with some madcap ideas. Our foreman when he found out what was going on went ballistic, but then spent hours with us playing with the set up. He put 2 afternoons down to “training sessions” a total of 48 hours, 52 if we added him in.

Hi Tony,

I should have said,
the small single phase 'pony motor' was only used to drive the pilot motor at start up, to save having to operate this by hand, then the pony motor was switched off (C/O switch/contactor),
and then once the pilot motor was running the other 'work motors' were added (switched) into the system.

This was many years ago, and I haven't seen anything else like this before or since, very heath robinson, but it seemed to work well enough.
