Hi any opinions on the following...

If asbestos is encountered on a periodic inspection . commonly on the fuse carriers of old rewireables or anywhere else to do electrically within the premises ,,
1. should it be reported
2. written on oberservation page of pir?
3. and also should i touch any of the breakers so that the testing can be fully implemented
thoughts please as maybe im being abit over cautious?

Asbestos basics - health and safety in the workplace

It’s not easy to tell asbestos from how it looks, and it needs to be properly identified in a specialist laboratory. But here are a few examples; some pictures are also featured in the asbestos picture gallery[2]:

• Asbestos used as packing between floors and in partition walls
• Sprayed (‘'impet') asbestos on structural beams and girders
• Lagging on pipework, boilers, calorifiers, heat exchangers etc
• Asbestos insulating board - ceiling tiles, partition walls, service duct covers, fire breaks, heater cupboards, door panels, lift shaft lining, fire surrounds, soffits etc.
• Asbestos cement products such as roof and wall cladding, bath panels, boiler and incinerator flues, fire surrounds, gutters, rainwater pipes, water tanks etc.
• Other products such as floor tiles, mastics, sealants, rope seals and gaskets (in pipework etc.), millboard, paper products, cloth (fire blankets, etc.) and bituminous products (roofing felt, etc)

Some of the examples listed above can only be carried out by a contractor who has been granted a licence from HSE, details of this can be found in the licensing section[3] of this website. Other jobs can be carried out using the task sheets[4], (make sure you use the correct sheet for the job). Also check the equipment and method sheets[5] for details on what to use and how.
How do I deal with asbestos waste?

Make sure you double-bag it and label as asbestos waste. You can then get in contact with the Local Authority or Environment Agency to find out if they will assist you in disposing of it, they may charge for this service. Alternatively, you can contact the Environment Agency[6] or if based in Scotland, SEPA[7]. The waste must be disposed of at a licensed tip.

Hey loopy.

I dont know where your based but Connaught (used to be National Brittania) based in caerphilly run a very good 2 day course on dealing with asbestos in the workplace.

It covers all areas from initial identification to the safe removal.

May be worth a look.

Hi any opinions on the following...
i have done work on MOD bases ; they asked me my for Safety Certificate / what the hell is that my reply !!
to get one tel phil Mc Carrick B-Safe Health & Safety Consultancy
my Safety Certificate , has undertaken Asbestos Awareness Training
in compliance with the control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 ( regulation 10 )
if there’s more than 5 he will come to, cost me 70 pounds
my mate and the apprentice had to get S / Certificate for work around council property ( it is a handy thing to have
it could save you losing work ,

thanks everyone for replying quickly its my first time on a forum so im abit green ha .. iv worked in the workplace on demolition sites providing the power for the ab bo guys with see thro tents everywhere etc .. still makes u worry like a mo fo will one stray particle get me ...

Anyway whats the situation of it being in the fuse carrier ... does it go on a periodic inspection report or even a electrical installation or minor wrks reports ?? i do inspection testing full time in my job and come across asbestos quite alot in the fuse carriers and always note it ... am i right in doing so do you as nothing in the regs about it . .

i know this is not what you are looking for however the saftey policy on my firm used to say we were ok to pull fuses and test and note asbestos, now however we are not allowed to do that and have to put unable to test asbestos present and notify the client i guess you could contact HSE and ask.

Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006

When work with asbestos or which may disturb asbestos is being carried out, the Asbestos Regulations require employers and the self-employed to prevent exposure to asbestos fibres. Where this is not reasonably practicable, they must make sure that exposure is kept as low as reasonably practicable by measures other than the use of respiratory protective equipment. The spread of asbestos must be prevented. The Regulations specify the work methods and controls that should be used to prevent exposure and spread.

I also come across this from time to time and always note it as a limitation and on the observations section. I/We do not expose the asbestos splash guards.

Re: Asbestos in Council Properties

Hi,

I was wondering if you would be interested in following my blog. It has been created in order to draw attention to Milton Keynes council and how they do not actively warn tenants that asbestos can be found in varying amounts and states, in all council properties.
They do provide information on their website, but I am campaigning to get the council to supply asbestos information in tenancy agreements. Thus hopefully making tenants more aware of how best to handle DIY and refurb projects, and encourage them to seek further advice if they are unsure.

Currently if the tenant hasn't heard of asbestos then they are unlikely to look at the council website or ring the asbestos helpline. This means they are at risk of exposing themselves to the deadly fiber by miss management of building materials.

I need as many names following the blog as possible, this will give us more power to make our case to the council.

I also have a facebook group and if it is easier for people to join that and show their support, they will be helping us make a difference here in MK.
