Hi guys, had a simple job fitting an inline fan today, I drilled a pilot hole in the sofit and I'm a bit concerned its asbestos, it's painted white although the actual material is a grey/blue colour and not very easy to drill. I only had a crappy paper mask and didn't want to risk it, I've not had much experience with asbestos, am I right in thinking it might be as I've heard it can be a common thing on sofit boards?

My first week at a previous company I worked for was to turn two store rooms in to one office with dado all around and new lighting etc.

I ripped down the entire ceiling (false ceiling) and stayed in the dust filled room without a mask for the whole period that I worked there. About 6 months after that I sat my first asbestos awareness course..

I'm 99% sure the ceiling tiles I removed and smashed to bits and binned were the ones shown as an example in a video.

Scary stuff.

When I was a young lad i was working on a new boiler (10 ton tank) heated by steam. The foreman I was working with nodded in the direction of the laggers working on the pipework and said they will be dead by the time they are 40. Its the asbestos in the lagging he said. That was the late 60's and we are still having problems with it today. I should add there was no such thing as PPE in those days and not much H&S either.

Couple of different types of it, we came across it the other day in oil tank store rooms, weeny sure so asked for a register with premises officer and it said in book the tiles on roof were asbestos but didn't mention ceiling, but the guy we met that morning for meeting said il have look il know and it was a mild one. Anyway no drilling. Job on hold now
