Hey guys

My first time on this forum. I am a fully licensed electrician in Australia moving over to London later in the year. I am looking for some advice on what I need to do to get my Australian license recognized in the UK and if there are any other qualifications I need to get to work in the construction industry in the UK?

Thanks in advance!

Michael

If the country where you did your training has a mandatory licensing system(which Australia does?), and you can provide validated proof that you hold a current licence in this country, then you can apply for an ECS Installation Electrician gold card.

In addition to your validated proof, you will require the ECS health and safety assessment and the UK wiring regulations qualification, the Level 3 Award in Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671: June 2008 (2015).

you will also require a copy of the latest regs

It depends on what work you want to do. I just did my 17th edition as that's all my job requires (Domestic service work, boring as **** but ok money). If you want to work on site then you will need your gold card. Working in London btw

A few translations will come in handy. Corri - corrugated conduit = Copex. Shifter = Spanner. MSSB = Distribution board. Globe = lamp. Active = Live. Red White and blue is Brown Black and grey. Neutral is blue. You better get used to a Hilmore vice and bender because you may do Steel conduit. Cable tray is worse in the UK not as much tolerance then the EZY strut equivalent. In the UK it's more mechanically protected with commercial and industrial sectors having a large verity of metal clad gear. The testing procedures Are far more advanced in UK. Earthing arrangements are far more advanced compared to AS/NZ comparisons. S.W.A's rather then V90 or XLPE Flexi. Twin and earth is rare on industrial installations and even some commercial compared to Aus. Radox fire cable is FP 200. Twin active or single SDI's are not used. Except for singles wiring in conduits. Bushes, lock rings, nipples, runners. Some heritage buildings may still utilise MICC or Pyro....

coming from a spark licenced and qualified in both countries. Originally a Pom.

If your working in London then a 2nd language could be useful

Well being out in Saudi you soon find out that we really are one of a kind when it comes to electrical installations. Europe isn't too bad, but world wide

Ring finals....forget them
SWA........ always. always installed with a separate earth, if there is an earth
Using the SWA as a CPC......forget that
Glands .......what are they shove into a hole and use a tie wrap if your lucky
Testing ..........eh what is that
Fused plugs........are you joking
TN systems provided by supplier ........ermmm no
Colour coding ..........anything that is in the suppliers
