UK BACK GARDEN LED FLOODLIGHT WITH PIR SENSOR (UK)

Hi guys,

Im looking at fitting a floodlight in my back garden. It is a 30w LED with PIR sensor (bought from Toolstation). Ideally, I want the PIR to work incase of any intruders in my gardeb, but also I want to be able to leave it on permanently with switch operation.

I therefore need help on the wiring part on how to do this. I will attach a picture of my light and cable it has on it.

P.s. I am a qualified but inexperienced Electrician. I will know what I'll be doing with the right explanation.

read the instructions. you may find that it has the facility to override by flicking the switch Off-On once or twice. failing which, you'd need to repace the flex with 4 core, likewise the feed cable to the wiska box. and fit an override switch. the override cable would need connecting inside the light to the PIR output terminal. bit of an awkward job.

Where can i buy one that is how you describe it? Or do they not exist?

Do you have the light already (as in the photos)?

If so put a 13A plug on it and test that out!

Doesnt mention anything about override in booklet.

You can't wire that light with an override-on switch, it's obvious from the 3 core cable.

You may be able to modify the fitting as per telectrixs suggestion.

Or return it and get a fitting which is suitable for your needs.

As above. That light won't support that feature without modification. But for the price, it isn't worth modifying. Your solutions would be either

a) exchange it for an appropriate fitting that features override. I believe tinegaurd manufacture them.

Or b) install a regular floodlight with a separate PIR appropriately wired to an override switching arrangement

Personally I would install a seperate PIR and floodlight because fittings that combine the two have never seemed to be entirely reliable in my experience.

I use Ansell floodlights and BEG PIRs for prefence and have had no problem with either, they don't have rock-bottom toolstation price tags, but then good quality parts rarely do.

There is only one light I use that will over ride on the led light is Hi Spec. So you can over ride on the switch.

Ok so i've decided to return these lights to exchange for a floodlight without a PIR and wire a seperate PIR to it.

What I wanted to ask was, shall I buy a standard PIR sensor or a 'Electronic Photocell Kit'?

just buy a PIR.

I think the 'Electronic Photocell Kit' is only for switching lights on when dark, not motion/body detection.

OK!... So i've changed the light for one without a PIR and bought a seperate PIR (see photo). Can I ask how the wiring is done? Is it the like the pictures i've attached? Im guessing both wiring drawings are thr same?

as i see your sketch, it looks OK. the left switch would normally be left on, to power the PIR, and the right switch is manual override. remember to sleeve the grey wire blue (N), and the black wire brown (s/L), bothe ends, and don't forget 2mm earth sleeve.
