Testing domestic consumer units.
Is a dead test actually a dead test if the fuse is not pulled or an isolator switch supplied by a DNO is not open.

Don't worry, I'm not about to mess about with this stuff unsupervised, til I'm competent.

for dead working/testing on a circuit, you can isolate with the MCB/fuse ( locked off) or by turning off the CU main switch. working in the CU, turn off main switch . be aware that the incomer terminals are still live. always prove dead with your voltage indicator.

Thanks Pete, Archy I've been studying the safe isolation procedure.
I'm pretty sure most of it has sunk into my thick skull :)

I'm asking the main live feed to the Consumer is still live.
I was getting a reading with my voltage tester telling me it was live.

Ah thanks,
I wanted to know if the results would be negatively effected, by this live cable,
and that technically I had followed the safe isolation procedure properly.

10 steps of safe isolatation:
1)Identify the circuit you're working on
2)Identify the supply for that circuit
3)Seek permission from appropriate person(s) to switch off the supply
4)Power down(Computers/any other electronics being run from the circuit)
5)Turn it off(via a circuit breaker etc.)
6)Lock it off with an electrician at work sign(It must be put through the padlock)
7)Prove equipment
8)Test for dead
9)Re-prove equipment
10)Barriers and signs
Must be an approved Voltage indicator and proving unit, when my tutor was going through it about half way through i'll keep saying "Test for dead" ... Was bound to be right at some point ;)

Ah, I think I get what you're getting at.
Main tails to CU are Live, Main Switch Off and locked, the CU is isolated (apart from the incoming supply).
Check the load side of the Main switch is dead and you're good to go.

Or a known live supply can be used.

who insist? me buy a proving unit when i've got the incoming ? more chance of the pope attending synagogue.
