Bathroom exhaust fan

Hi I'm Daniel Honaberger. I bought house that has a mixture of new and old wire. I'm in the process of remodeling the bathroom. I took out the old nutone fan with and replacing it with the light. I hooked up all the wires but one set. When I did this I got power to the unit but nothing turns on. Would like advise.

It is impossible to decipher what is going on there and why or who taped-up the unterminated wires. Why is the white, presumed to be hot disconnected and a ground maybe through illusion connected to the switch.

Dave if you know for a fact you have power going to the light and it won’t come on then it has to be a neutral loss. Possibly you have the white wires crossed up. I hate it but a lot of electricians use the white for a switch leg which should always should be wrapped with black tape to identify it is being used as a live wire.

I took out an old nutone fan with heater and now replacing with out a heater.

You need to go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy you a non contact voltage checker which don’t cost but around $ 15.00
It had three switches with Dial for the heater. Now I'm trying to go with this switch or something like it. I do have that tester. When I hook 2 set of wires up but one I get power to everything but nothing turns on.
