Have just installed a bathroom exract fan ,which is to come on when the light is operated i have installed a tp isolator .Both fan and isolator have no provision for an earth back in the old days i would have put a block connector on the earth at the fan and jointed at the isolator, but i was advised by mr Nic that if wiring a class 2 equipment no protectecive conductor should be taken to that equipment can any body advise me on a suitable 3 core cable that does not have an earth within it i`ve been to three merchants to day all of which do not have anything in stock and dont know what im going on about
Should i install a fused spur to the circuit in which the earth can be terminated but still leaves me with the problem of my earthless 3 core help please...................

Phil

Do the Regulations not require a cpc to be terminated at every point except the drop to an all-insulated lampholder? I'm only after recommending that flexes be replaced to a number of Class II fans because they have no cpc during a number of Periodic Inspections.

Just terminate CPC in suitable connector within backbox (wago do some neat kit ) and sleeve and terminate cpc in fan housing

Agreed, I'm sure the regs state that a CPC should be wired to every accessory regardless of whether its Class II or not.

The class II equipment could be changed for class I kit by some bod and if there is no cpc present the temptation might be to not bother.....thats why a cpc should be present ar each point.

Phil, everyones right - you need a cpc at every point so you need a 4C flex anyway. However if you had a need for a 3C, two line condutors and neutral you can just use normal 3C flex and sleeve the green/yellow with brown sleeving at both ends (or even better a bit of heat shrink). BS7671, Identification of Conductors.

Thanks for all your advice ,i do have cpc to fan i think i will add a jb and a short flex with brown sleeved cpc to fan .only because i am due to be assessed and fear being pulled , i know my assessor does not like unused sleeved cpc at accessory
Thanks again
Phil

Using a green and yellow conductor for anything other than an earth whether sleeved or not is a hanging offence,it is not permitted.

As soon as I read that post I thought the same, however, I cannot find it in the regs. Only a single core green/yellow cable cannot be used for anything other than earth. And of course the bare conductor in twin + earth.

just change the 3connector block to a 4connector block, you need to take a cpc to all accessories, i dont understand why you would think otherwise. change the back box for the tp isolator to one which does have an earth connector in the back?
all that you will be pulled up for is a floating connection, something that mr nic isnt going to accept.

Think Mr NIC needs a kick up the bum! Ask him this, "If you run a 2 core cable to a class II accessory and the cable is concealed above a ceiling, then Mr DIY comes along to put a nail or screw into the ceiling, would he be happy with Mr DIY getting a short circuit shock rather than a Live to earth shock? I appreciate that the RCD should trip in either case, but I would never run a cable to anything without a CPC, except where it is Double Insulated, visible and very unlikely to get damaged.

I also looked into this problem when I was supplied with pre wired occupancy sensors. They had over sleaved the earth with brown sleaving. There was a specific rule in the 16th edition regarding the earth conductor in flex. It stated something about being coloured green end yellow throughout its length and could only be used as a protective conductor. This regulation is definately not in the 17th

It was in the 16th but I think was removed from the 17th. That said, I am completely opposed to a green/yellow core being used as anything other than a protective conductor and believe that it should never be oversleeved.

Reg 514.4.2.....I take that to mean a conductor which is green and yellow can only be used as an earth conductor, correct me if I've interpreted that wrong.
But I make no apologies for this....using a green and yellow sleeved as a live conductor is one of the worst cases of bad practice I can think of,a few moments thought by anyone with any electrical knowledge will be enough to see the potential dangers. You dont need a regulation...i'ts common sense.
