i have a customer who would like a bathroom extractor installed they have no rcd on lighting circuit my question is do i have to provide rcd protection as im not installing a new circuit just adding a fan to existing bathroom light circuit

sorry to say that you will be wireing the fan, so your instalation must comply with the 17th edition. look at section 7 of the regs

Edit I would give you the answer as it is but think reading the regs is good for all of us.. :)

my guess is it's the same thought process we all go through from time to time.
all they want is x now I have to tell them they need x,y and Z.

But to be fair once I explain the extra work, and point out that they will find someone who will do x only, but that that someone is not me.
I normally still get the job.

701.32.1
For electrical equipment in parts of walls or ceilings limiting the zones specified in the reg 701.32.2 to 4, but being part of the surface of that wall or ceiling, the requirements of the respective zone applies.

Up to you whether the fan is "in" the wall or "part of the surface".

Yet another stupid example of the regs.

IMHO what it should say that all electrical equipment visible within a bathroom, should be protected by a RCD. So that way, be it a light, fan in a wall, shaver point, electric towel rail etc its covered. If its an inline fan in the loftt then that's exempt.
