Hi all, I have recently moved a second bathroom and have a couple of questions. The earth bond wire from the old bathroom is buried into the wall and has about 6 foot exposed into where the old bathroom was, can I just cut this off or can I extend it to bond the new bathroom which is a further 15feet away? I will be installing a 10.5kw electric shower on a 30a rcd does this need a supplementary bond? I will also be installing a water heater on its own circuit as I cant pipe hot water to this location, will this need to be supplementary bonded?. As far as I can make out the bonding wire will go back to the main consumer unit, but there is a separate consumer unit that served the old bathroom and kitchen (basically an annexe that is connected to main house) I also cannot seem to find any bonding to mains water etc. We have only just moved here, many thanks, Steve

Do you know that feeling you get when you see a large suited businessman walking towards an open manhole...:conehead:

10.5 kw shower needs 45a mcb/rcbo not 30a. U may not require supplementary bonding if exiting consumer unit is 17th ed. Test ur extranious condutive parts.
Also need gas/water bond up to scratch and the work your doing is notifiable.
If your not a sparkie I would get one if I were you.

Awful advice...the shower needs a cable installed for the load, not simply uprating the protection device from 30A (although I suspect the OP means a 30mA RCD).

And drop the *removed* text speak, it's annoying.

Do u fink my last comment was awful advice about getting a spark in to sort it.
I was merely stating the complications to sum 1 who may not know what they were doin. Obviously the cable will need to be able to carry the current for the load.
Hop this annoyed u too.
What does dj stand for? Dick jockey?

I will be using the existing cable from the old shower (10mm) from the exisiting mcb which is 40a as I don't believe you can get a 45a mcb, I am more interested in the old earth bonding wire and what to do with it, Im actually a very able brickie who has a little knowledge but not as much as a sparkie, I know the work is notifiable and I am going to get the whole house checked when this is done and get the water and oil inlets earthed.

When you get a spark in to check whole house he will check the existing bonding and advise what to do. They will also need to install the circuit for the new water heater.
You cant just get a spark in after you do the work.
Supplementary bonding may not be required if you get the main water bonding done

The regs require main earth bonding to be verified as adequate before any work starts. Full stop. Has this been done ?

As Kate said, you can't get a spark in later to sign off your work, it doesn't work like that. Would you put your name on a legal document taking responsibility for an extension built by a sparky ?

What on earth has convinced you to install a 10.5KW monstrosity, given all its installation complications caused by size?
And for what benefit? I bet my 8.5KW will perform no worse than such a power guzzling contraption

Yes 45 amp MCBs are available, your monstrosity may actually be precarious even on a 45 amp
Have you worked out the current demand from the monstrosity,it will probably surprise you
Even the isolation switch has to be given load consideration or it won't last 5 minutes

If installation methods permit and current carrying capacity was preserved,a 50 amp may be a better consideration
The earth bonding cable you ask about,it must be installed as part of the regulations requirements,it can be omitted if specific conditions permit
These can be accessed via the regulations book
