Hi,

If I'm fitting a ceiling fan in the bedroom off the lighting circuit then do I need any more isolation than switching off the lighting circuit at the fuse box?

One set of instructions telling me I need a double pole isolator which I could understand in a bathroom or commercial but seems OTT in a domestic bedroom.

Thanks for any help!

.....manufacturers instructions are in direct conflict with bs7671 ,
which do you install to ?

I don't work to BS7671 but if there was a conflict between the manufacturers instructions and my local regs (or even common sense for that matter) I'd ignore the manufacturers instructions in a heartbeat.

I'd also never try to externally protect an appliance such as a ceiling fan from an internal fault. If the fan requires LRA protection or internal fault protection then it should be more specific than a fuse in an isolator and the item should be supplied with it built-in during manufacture.

Only just got back again to read this thread and I must admit I didn't think the question would elicit so many comments! But they've all been very interesting.

As a DIYer putting in the basics and trying hard not to cock anything up (as in do it properly!) it amazes (and occasionally amuses) me how the regs, manufacturers and reality don't always quite seem to match up.....! It must frustrate the hell out of you professionals!

The good natured banter has certainly brought up a smile!

Great forum.
