I would like to reply with a witty response to that, but to be honest I have no idea why 'residue' was even mentioned. Oh the shame!!

up to the minute technology on that. i use a sharpie or the point of a screwdriver whacked in with hammer.

I bought one recently - Leicia lino 2+ or something. I bought it because I was marking out in a very long room with no reliable levels.
i agree the old ways are often best, but in this case I am sold. It literally took minutes to mark out the room, and it wasn't just 'alright' or 'near enough' it was absolutely spot on.
