Still have some in my shed from years ago and come across it often on old installs. It seems to have gone out of fashion. (prolly due to silicone) Does anyone still use this? did an internet search could not find the original product but found this PRYSMIAN R391 WEATHERPROOF PLASTIC COMPOUND PUTTY SEALS CONNECTORS, TERMINALS ENCLOSURES - http://www.cablejoints.co.uk/sub-product-details/3m-scotchlok-connectors/prysmian-r391.
It was used just like plastercine and you just moulded it to shape.

Remember when I was an aprentice someone had some toffee's and wrapped a square of this in a treacle toffee paper it made a real mess of his mates teeth.

I did a big rework not long ago where external floodlights had been connected with SWA terminations (semi-underground in damp ceramic pots, or in gravel) using Galv conduit boxes. The original work was mid-1980's. The boxes were potted fully to the lid with brown stiff goo. I never got to the bottom of what it was, it smelt slightly oily and clay-like. On the basis it was possibly quite toxic, I was careful digging it out when I re-did all the joints.

Bottom line was that it had become incredibly conductive. Ohm-meter probes touching the material an inch apart could easily record just a few ohms. Needless to say, IR was so ridiculous with about twelve of these in the circuit, a complete overhaul was needed just to barely scrape into limits.

I never worked out what it was. Browm Plasticine or - now I see it - maybe this stuff.

..Which was often used for potting in those days? It obviously didn't start out that conductive before it got saturated.

Pyro compound is grey in my limited experience of it rmx compound I believe.
