I prefer to use a J.B be it an MF one as a last resort don't like any joints you can't get to.If that JB in the void is going to be used to connect the cables it needs to remain accessible, if it wont be you need a MF connection box

Use 1mm² twin and earth / three core and earth for ease.
Layout is variable but could be like this, if it is a timed fan.

Remember the work needs testing for compliance with the wiring regulations.
Once you turn off the bathroom light there should be no live on the SW live.Is it? Have you got a copy of the circuit diagram for the internal electronics of the specific fan being fitted here?
