hey there. just a bit of help needed lads.

ive got to run a swa cable approx 100metre out of back of a farmhouse (clipped direct around 2 metre out of house) then run around 80 metre down a field some of cable underground other parts just run down side of garden probably slighty dug in at places, then into old shed, then into wylex garage unit all backed up with 40amp mcb. i am thinking of using 6mm 3 core. just wondered if anyone knows how to work out how much voltage i would be losing ?

i am using 6mm 3 core so i can comfortablely use 9000w power in the shed

i have done a calc but want to reassure myself a bit as i am not confident. :-s

help please

what do you mean nowhere near ? the way i worked it out is i need 9000w watt total so even if its 230v im getting 9000w / 230v = 39.1Amp and thats if its 230v most likely more than that, and 6mm swa should be able to take 39amp with ease ?

maybe im mile off but would like some advice on where im going wrong or what would work better, apart from runing any big 16mm, moneys an issue haha

have you not heard of volt drop 6mm will take 39amp with ease but is well over the max allowed, 16mm is the very smallest cable you can use but that will not allow any lights to be installed.

I think you should get someone who know what they are doing as theres alot more than voltdrop to think about

well instead of all the clever comments i wouldnt mind some info haha, im still an apprientice and havnt run a cable as far as this before... why would 16mm only jus allow for lights ? surely 6 is cheap and adaquate ? even if its just 7 40w lamps ? around 8/9000w power run through sockets on a 32a ring main ? i worked out the voltage drop at 0.32v was shocking though as i was expecting 3-6 volts, for lights i think the max voltage drop is 6% might be wrong though. just looking for some wizz kid to set me straight

6mm isn't enough. Remember, it's a long run, the longer you run, the thicker the cable needs to be. 6mm over a short run may take 39A depending on where it goes, but over 100m to get a 39A rating you'll need to up it quite a bit.

hmm well i am asking about the voltage drop initally, i used the calc in the onsite guide and came up with 0.32v, but as i said it was less than i expected.... well 6mm swa can take 47amp right ? maybe less under the circumstance of 100 metres ? looking for all round advice on what others would do? my inital iea was a 40amp mcb, 100metre of 6mm 3core swa. garage unit with 2 32a ring mains with a load of around 400w on each ring main. and around 7 penants with 40w lamps on the 6a mcb..... that is the total load of the shed - around 8000w in power and 280w in lamps ( pendants wouldnt be all on at same time) but the 8000w in power would be used at the same time.... but that was just my inital idea if you lot had to do this job with mate wanting it done on a cheap budget, i thought 6mm was pushing it but would get away with it ?
