just been to price for a board change and some remedial works, i noticed the cutout has a black puddle below it, and it's dripping out from inside it. sort of like a black oily stuff.
anyone seen this before??

Seen it once mate...had to get the service head replaced on an emergency basis (late one night got a call about smell of burning). The problem was the same!

ps. i suggest you may end up doing the same and advise your client accordingly

Sorry for the brief response Exarmy...going on holiday tomorrow so running about like the proverbial. Common sense prevails here though and any issue like this someone should be straight on to the dno. You can even offer to do it for them which may in turn lead to the work you are quoting for.

hey everyone, assuming the DNO do this for free?! Seen this at a house the other day. I was wondering what it was! Thanks everyone.

They damn' well should do it for free ........ it's THEIR bit of kit !!!

If they do charge, where will it end? The logical conclusion is that next they'll be sending the bill for their van repairs & MOT to the customer !!!

i've tried that twice on the past 2 months, and got no-where. it seems they don't trust us as electricians to tell them what the problem is, so don't act on reports from sparks, but if the customer phones up they are straight out to replace it!

If it is a paper/lead incoming cable it will be the oil in the cable migrating through the pitch in the CO (which makes it black), seen it a lot and apart from a small amount of mess is no problem usually. If it is hard pitch that has leaked out it is either a sign the CO has been hot or a clumsy jointer when it was fitted. If you are not sure get the DNO out and tell them you can smell burning.

If i see this or see nice shiny pitch i will call them straight away , the amount of house fires on incomming supplies is quite high as has been said there could be a potential fault and by you getting them out could well prevent a fire and possibly save some ones life all for a 2 minuit phone call

asbestos fibre in bitumin not heard of that one well if there is which i doubt then it will be relativly harmless as it will be stuck to the bitumin
