Ok so Ive got some time to look at the drill..... It all looks ok tested across the connections and I have 110v going into the drill..... Where to look next? Do I keep going taking it apart?

put your mutimeter/ohm meter , one lead on each brush holder ( drill not plugged in ), and you should get a few ohms ( 10 - 20 ohms ) . rotate armature and this reading should stay the same across different segments of the comm. if so, then ohm meter each field coil. they should each give you a lowish ohms reading. then, if ok, from switch outgoing terminals. should get the sum od the armature + both field coils. then meter the switch for continuity, probably 2 pole.

Have you checked the carbon brushes to make sure they are contacting correctly???

When removed the contact side should be smooth & shiney.

I'd take it to an authorised service centre and pay them to do it. My tutor at college said it was really easy to take a drill apart and clean it, so I had a go with an old Black & Decker drill. It came apart alright, bit of a mission getting it back together though.
I ended up giving it to the college.
Maybe that was what was supposed to happen.

I'd like to have a go at taking it apart. Only going to learn..... I'll find a schematic drawing and then I'll be able to follow the advice you guys have given me. Cheers

Tel your going to have to forgive me. Only just started motors in college and this is my first time :)
basically, the juice goes from the trigger, through a brush , through the armature, out through the other brush, through the field coils and back to N, usually via the trigger, it's just all in series. sure tony will soon come up with a diagram to show it clearly, soon.

The brushes are clearly visible in your picture, they are inside the brass tubes with the coil springs holding them in. Push the springs back with a screwdriver and they should easily slide out, if they are working correctly.

or put ohm meter one lead on each of the square brass thingies ( brush holders ) and see if you get continuity. if not, brushes are fav.

Both are smooth although one has a dark mark on the edge of it... [ElectriciansForums.net] Bosch drill.....
