or put ohm meter one lead on each of the square brass thingies ( brush holders ) and see if you get continuity. if not, brushes are fav.

Put them back and I now have 2 ohms between brass thingies. Not sure if I had continuity before thou as I already had the brushes out

I have 2 ohms between the brass thingies but I'm not sure if I had continuity before because I already had the carbon brushes out

Ok, tried the drill and it's working, must've been the brushes. Can't say how awesome that feels but I couldn't have done it without you guys! Thank you!!!!

From the picture showing a individual brush, the brush in question appears to be at least half the length of a new one. So I would replace the brushes as part of you repair, however, apart from the resulting reduced spring pressure this may not be the primary fault.

Just read your last post where it appears the brushes are the primary fault.

most tools now have auto cut off when the brushes wear down.a lot of bosch and makita have 2 leds on handle red and green when ok both come on when brushes wear down one goes out, brush wear cutoff was designed to prevent commutator burn out due to excessive sparking caused by worn brushes,I repair and service all my kit myself and this is the most common fault,a quick tip with sds drills is to grease the chuck regularly as a dry chuck leads to loss of hammering,a spot of grease on end of drill bit is all you need.
