I understand the difference between type b c and d, but what's the difference between type 1 2 and 3?

Obsolete now to get in line with Europe

You asked about time-current curves and the above posts answer your question.

If you're only bothered about max Zs values (0.1 to 5 second disconnection times) then BS 3871 (Types 1, 2 and 3) are still in the OSG, Table B6 (the one they issued the errata for), in case you missed it.
