How do you know which is feed and return?

Installed a 12 gang grid switch and used Brown/Brown and when wiring up the switches was wondering if there is a trick to knowing which is which.

Was a bit of a faff but sorted it during dead testing today but thought, why isn't one core distinctively marked, or maybe a different colour, say blue?

I hope no one is serious about marking the switch wire in a twin brown with blue tape? That would indicate it was a neutral. It should be marked with Grey. Black or any of the other approved colours for live.

Is a good suggestion, with more "smart" switches needing neutral for background power (and no flickering LED lamps) it would make that aspect better, through needing a few more meters of cable.

we never had these discussions when it was all red/black. anothe thing to blame on the IEE/EU/PC brigade/snowflakes/gender neutrals/aliens/EMF/government/Welsh/immigrants/feminists/ even Scousers.

I didn't miss the irony on that one Tel. I can't think of many things more snowflakey than moaning about the colour of a cable

Red and Black made more sense - Still used in electronics - Red = Danger/Warning etc what is Brown?
I'm glad it is harmonised but it should of been Red and Black instead.

same with 3 phase r/y/b.. primary colours. bn/bk/gy.. negative non colours.

The idea of colour harmonisation is great, and the use of green/yellow striped for earth/CPC excellent as even a colour-blind person can identify the most critical wire to get right.

But the new phase colours were a rubbish choice as they are counter-intuitive. In nature all of the most dangerous animals (wasps, poisonous frogs, etc) make themselves bright to warn predators "have a go if you think you're hard enough?". The same should apply to cables. Ask most folk without electrical training to say which is the earth/ground wire and many will say brown as it is the colour of soil.

if we all boycotted buying cable till we got proper colours back, could be done. wonderful thing is apathy. nobody protests, changes are made without consultation, we end up with stupid things devised by gender neutral snowflakes. any protest we are racist/sexist/homophobic dinosaurs
