,always change the panel battery every 5 years because this is to blame for about 90% of false alarms

disagree there, user error is main cause of false alarms, then wrong detector in the the wrong place,i find battery faults cause the least fa's in maintained systems

even if you can rely on the police response, the monitored system is useless once pikey's cut your phone line ( unless you have taken out a 2nd mortgage and got redcare)

doesnt happen that much now, dualcom is a good alternative to redcare and red/gsm tho prefer redcare..and its a reasonable cost as is dualcom

user error closely followed by no maintenance...I've replaced many a panel where the battery was a molten clump of yuk, usually dated about 8 years plus. People get their cars serviced, why not their alarms? never ceases to amaze me...

battery faults usually just mean that the SABM activates when thee mains fails. occasionally a faulty battery will blow the battery fuse. agree user error is often to blame for fa's. incorrect installation is the fault of the installer.

battery fuses quite often dont blow and the battery draws too much current to try to charge a knackered battery. hence the kaput panel. All these times you hear alarms ringing during and after a power cut can mostly be due to a duff battery...

and frequently the battery becomes knackered due to cheap panel charging circuitry, which is primitive to say the least.

I've changed yuasa batteries that tested ok after 12 years, but changing a panel from and ols Itec Horizon to a scanny 9751 it would be stupid not to change the battery. Yuasa are the best batteries IMHO

Alarm man we will have to agree to disagree as the old BS4737 states that a battry should be changed when it gets to 80% efficancy and the manufacturer tells you this happens when the battery is 5 years old and at 20-22oC if the temp is higher then the shorter the life. As I said the majority of calls I get both from joe public and the letting agent I do work for is " We had a power cut and the alarm went off all on its own and I could not enter the code to silence it" also when the powe does come back on they get into a panic put the wrong code in then lock out the panel. Another thing I have noticed is joe public will not get their system serviced so any wonder why they have problems

omnicron or as we used to call it omnichronic was the biggest load of ---- made. it was worse than the original optima with the membrane keypad

I used to work for a small alarm firm on weekends for beer tokens, we fitted literally thousands of optimas and omnicrons...we scrapped the omnicroms when they upgraded the 6000 as they kept popping pcb's. I finally got the firm to fit to bs4737, customers were getting a good alarm fitted in 2-3 hours to british standard for the same price as the clip round the carpet squad. The firm had over 8000 alarms when they were taken over due to the owner retiring...

youve got an act battery tester then..batterys not being changed is a non maintained issue, weve all heard systems act when the power goes off in the street.hence the need for maintained systems
