well you have done everything you can and can sleep easy - you can only advise, its not down to you if they dont listen to your recomendation - well done that man......

As a few asked to be kept informed this is still on going. I sent the photos over to ELECSA who requested them when I phoned up to discuss it with them, they have not come back to me though. The customer has spoken to their Insurance but because it did not catch fire they were not interested. So I have locked off the offending circuits and wait on the customer.

with the last sentance , looking at the picture ,it did catch fire but as ive said it may well have extiguished its self

ELECSA called me again today, wanted to know how I was getting on with this one as the cables were so badly burned. ELECSA recommend a full rewire and RCD protection.
Now to the job in question, found out today the Customer called in a friend of a friend who has replaced the burned cable and replaced the boards, all done in two days. May be I am a little slow it took me 3 days to find, isolate, diagnose and recommend a course of action. Whatever the case there is no way I would have done the above. Pretty sure the customer thinks I was stringing them along but at least I can sleep at night!

While a rewire may be recommended, what you could do is repair the cable and then carry out a full test on the installation.

However, looking at the pics, it does look like sub standard cable coupled with possible overload and covered in insulation has caused this.

Now we can see why 4mm and 1.5mm should be used, especially with the amount of insulation required in houses these days.

i went to look at a job for a guy once who`s wiring was in a right mess. lets say he was not at all willing to spend any more than just a couple of quid on putting it all right. the upstairs lighting curcuit was in a right mess. he asked me what he could do after telling me he did not want to pay much for it doing. my answer was get down to wickes and buy a couple of smoke alarms. i didn`t do it to scare him but i didn`t want the house going up in flames either. there was a fine line of telling him how it was and not just sounding like i was trying to drum up some extra cash, which i really didn`t need as i was stacked out anyway. he decided the best option was to rip it out and re do it which he decided to do instead of the smokes, to which he asked for some fitting anyway

this always has and will always be the worst part of the job, as soon as you mention whats required on most jobs the customer decides its ok bob down the pub can do it for ÂŁ20
