Buzzing consumer box - what's that all about?

Hi,

Ever since I moved in to my house the consumer box in the garage has been making a buzzing sound. The smoke alarm, cooker, and upstairs light circuits have all been switched off or tripped at one time or another and this made no difference.

But recently I had to switch the ground floor light circuit off to replace a ceiling rose - and the buzzing stopped immediately. And once the work was complete and the circuit switched on again the buzzing started again - so what's all that about?

Does the buzzing indicate a fault on the circuit?

could be loading if the circuit in question is heavily loaded then the MCB can vibrated this could be whats causing the buzz , i would get a suitably qualified electrician to inspect and test the CDU for your peace of mind

Make sure the main switch is OFF before you even think about taking the lid off

Either overloading or failing MCB.

could also be a faulty mcb

very common if the loading is close to the mcb capacity and there are fluorescent lights or transformers on the circuit. A qualified competent person should be able to sort it.

ok, thanks. I'll get someone in to check it out.

Just a thought though - if it was overloaded wouldn't it only buzz when all the lights were turned on? I mean this was during the day so all the lights were off at the time...
