I am doing my 2391 course now in college

I have been set some homework and just want some feedback from a few of you.

I have been asked to give a large list of differences between an industrial installation and a domestic installation.

I have a few but I don't touch industrial at all so not quiet sure of any more

Your advice will be greatly appreciated!

Post the list that you have so far, no doubt you may get a couple of pointers to guide you in the right direction.

well, for a start, and this is basic. with industrial, most installation is surface... tray, trunking, conduit. more technical as regards design. the main criteria is functional rather than aesthetic, and robust equipment, whereas domestic work is more aesthetic with lower loadings, sure you can think of more.

Hi nich

Im an industrial electrician at a powerstation:

Relays
Contactors
Emergency stop buttons
Dc circuits
Pyro cable

Are they the type of things you looking for?

Are they just looking for a list, or a description of comparisons between the two, eg a domestic property might be wired in twin & earth while an industrial property might be wired in singles in conduit or SWA?

With industrial work it may vary in respect of what type of industrial work is undertaken ie. while working at a distillery recently all our equipment had to be intrinsically safe for example; Therefore we had very strict procedures to follow when using equipment this will or may not be needed in domestic situations.

Edit: the implications of this are thus....while running a swa to the garage in a domestic setting simply get the correct glands and a couple of spanners, hacksaw, knife and well bobs your uncle. While running a swa in an industrial setting you may have to comply with compex for example

The list could be very long, others have posted physical things like containment etc, consider some others such as:

pfc higher due to larger cables and parallel earth paths, which may need higher rated ka for cb`s

additional protection may be required for hazardous areas

distribution circuits to test

pfc at all relevant points, db`s again

voltage danger notices

obstructed switchgear is common

trunking lids missing

and dont forget the SADCOWES CHECK
SAFETY
AGEING
DAMAGE
CORROSION
OVERLOAD
WEAR AND TEAR
EXTERNAL INFLUENCES
SUITABILITY

Remember also testing will be different. 10 IR tests, not three. Different method to deduce Pfc to single phase. Erm, strong possib. that Ze measurement not possible in alot of industrial & commercial situ's ( as complete power down costs money in 24x7 places). Phase rotation test. Different warning notices.
