6mm on a 40A if clipped direct ( 47A )

but how far do you go with future proofing. in a year or 2, cookers may be available drawing 60A so her indoors could cook dinner in 4 minutes flat, without missing any soaps rubbish on the box.

when I said clipped direct I meant hanging behind the cooker that's ok isn't it because I have to wire the cooker up then push it back between the units.

yeah, that's fine. if you want to be posh, you could get a couple of yards of 6mm heat resistant flex from your outlet to the cooker, but the heat from out of a modern cooker is not great enough to affect pvc cable.

Yep, ...they have been using 6mm or the old 7/044 standard type building cable, since as far back as i can remember. Never yet seen or heard of any problems of burning or heat damage from the cooker....

hi, I have got the cooker working, sort of. I used 6mm t&e and after terminating it turned the 4 rings on 1 by 1, got all 4 rings on turned the cooker on RCD tripped. I reset it turned the oven on turned the grill on turned 1 ring on RCD tripped. I reset it turned 1 ring on RCD tripped. The oven and grill seem to be ok it's when the rings are on.n Has anyone got any suggestions as what might be causing this to happen.

The cooker had been in a garage for about 18 months and then into my mates flat about 10 day's ago.

I'm still learning too so I do t know how to explain it properly but the element in one of the rings might be busted causing the rcd to trip???

I thought that but it doesn't matter which ring I turn on it trips straight away. some times with just one ring or sometimes I can urn a couple on before it trips.

One or more elements on the rings probs need replacing. Could well be to do with moisture ingress while being stored. They are generally fairly cheap and easy to replace. Take them out and insulation resistance test them - lives to earth :)

edit - sometimes i believe you can drive the moisture out , but it is a sign that they are on their way out anyway.

I'll never forget watching my old gaffer doing this on a cooker for some little old lady, was only my second or third day in work.

I can guarantee they dont teach that at college.:stuart:

smoking probably caused by fat residue and/or dust. your only chance is as pushrod says, is to IR test the whole appliance, then , if the reading is poor, each element in turn. note that elements sometimes read ok when cold but break down as soon as they get warm. due to expansion.
