Hi you brainy people

Think am gonna have to dig myself a trench and put on my tin hat for this question but here goes, can a standard PVC/PVC cable be clipped direct outside to a wall or fence as long as its protected by rcd. Or does it have to have a form of mechanical protection.

Well I ran a T&E up to my shed 20 mtrs away from my house 20 years ago clipped to a fence and it is still working and looks fine, I haven't tested it in 20 years though, apart from a pond supply, a weatherproof socket and 2 fluorescent lights it has not got much load on it, Biff is this okay?

and who says FP200 is good for outside installation? if you use red FP200, it will soon go pink, FFS, and who wants that?

i did.
and the cable manufacturers themselves.
and anything coloured red fades quickly in strong UV , doesnt mean its detrimental in any way.
and why would anyone use red cable surface clipped outside in an domestic setting ?

Because its surface and its less than 50mm, if it was more than 50mm from surface then it wouldn't require rcd @ glennspark

I'm in agreement with glennspark here. You seem to be under the impression that a cable outdoors requres RCD protection.

You will need RCD protection for socket outlets, but not for surface run cable (or SWA using any installation method).

Unless it's a TT supply.
