It looks like I am going to be the one that gets lumbered with a cable joint to do.
In a metre deep trench, in the rain, I'm going to have to joint an old PILC to a new 2 core 16mm2 SWA.
I've not had this particular pleasure before so I'm wondering if any of you guys could give me advice.
Thanks!

Wait for Tony, i know he has had the pleasure of making off such a joint or two..... He, as i remember said that it wasn't too much of a problem. The skill side will come from knowledge of dealing with the PILC cable side of things, which he has....

No I have never had to touch lead stuff before.
I haven't been given any jointing kit yet. Looks like tonight I will be doing a bit of research on the net, but its helpful to ask people that have actually done it.

fold the armouring back over on itself with the lead cable , you dont want any pressure from the earth spring / clamp connection pushing onto the cores within.
tonys not the only one to have jointed lead ;-)

a good blow torch is essential and alcohol wipes are very very handy, just dont let the two meet, if their not available, plenty of rag and wd40 works as a good replacement. their not too bad once u get into them, just take your time, i tend to ude the birkett swishpak joints up to 300mm, these come with brilliant instructions

Thanks everyone.
A blow torch will not be available to me as I'n going to be doing the joint in an explosives area. I'll probably need to get special permission just to use WD40 as well because it comes in an aerosol can.
