the way the house is the main board is on ground level and straight above that is the top floor, its staged out floors its not 1,2,3,4 straight up its set out left to right each floor and has 1 set stairs to each 5-6steps so the ring will be 80meters max .

i cant see the need for cable tray with sub main in this instance my fault for not explaining correct in essence the top floor is 1 up but has 1 floor inbetween 1 stair up and down

sorry bad description , basically is two storey on each side of the house but stepped out so its

im basically asking for advice on the loft area as there is no insulation but will be 300mm of insulation going in at later date.
i know the cabling on external walls is sufficient as it will be protected my rcd , will be more than 50mm from the surface and cables will be run horizontally/vertically to any accessory or D/B and will be within 150mm from where ceiling meets wall and wall meets wall in corner.
i will be using 2.5mm t&e on ring protected with 32a circuit breaker length of run is 80 meters max

loft cabling can be run above the level of the insulation and where it drops through the itchy poo, a bit of drainpipe around it will suffice. for your downlighters, use LED lamps.

when you say it can be run above the level of insulation do you mean on the horizontal beams , the insulation will be put in after the cabling has been done ,.
the loft is very little space 3ft max and wont be floored , very awkwardly shaped ,
ideally the insulation would be in before wiring and i could clip direct to joists and run over insulation ,
but the insulation is 300mm thick so would be.

yes just fix timber battens across the rafters at least 350mm or more above the ceiling and fix cables to this.

so make a pathway with 350mm board along the horizontal rafters to keep the cables away from the insulation.
after looking at the set up the ring main will only be in the loft for 10% of the run.
the lighting will be all in loft
1.5t&e reference method 101 can take 13a even with derating factor of 0.51 it would be reduced to 6.62amps which is sufficient , i dont plan on having cables covered with any insulation but the calculations say it would be sufficient.
thanks for your help mate glad to see someone who isnt totally arrogant to the fact some electricians may have a QUERY and we all dont read the regulation book back to front day and night,
we all do everything for a first time and the whole point of this forum is for guidance from professional people who have first hand experience of the specific things we ask.
i would understand the arrogance if i asked (what is a switch wire ,can i wire shower in speaker cable) etc NOTE TEXT IN BRACKETS I ACTUALLY DO KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS AS I HAVE BEEN IN TRADE 8+ YEARS

CHEERS dagrat

get a life
what is wrong with asking for advice
you guys waste no time on jumping on the band wagon to try and humiliate anyone that asks any questions
industrial spark asking for domestic advice.

when i asked about downlighters and how to protect against the insulation i was simply asking the niceic requirements either
Fireguard Loftbrace for 400mm Joist Centers
or fire hoods etc.
basically asking what they would be 100% happy with.
but you guys obviously love the fact that someone is asking a question and take full advantage to ridicule them
im starting to believe that these forums are mainly used by jobs worth electricians that keep the regs in the back pocket and pull it out anytime they dont wont to do something and try find a sentence in the book that will get them out of it, by all means i am not saying do not go with the regs but yous guys take it to a different level.

quote of the century for this forum (how long have you been sparkying/in the trade/an electrician

i think yous go by the saying if you dont know dont even think about trying to find out
were all qualified to the same standards but all have different working backgrounds.

over and out

This was actually a really interesting forum when I joined, i agree there are too many posters that get bullied off the threads at the moment though

thanks keniff i really like the fact there is somewhere to go for advice from other sparks and response times are pretty fast.
but there are obviously some electricians that are soo set in there ways and are obviously experienced to a pretty high level that anyone with a little less experience than them shouldnt be a electrician getting old guys
