I had a sparky round to price up a job, the job was to put power to the summer house in the garden, the price he was going to charge I thought was over the top, was looking at doing it myself, could someone tell me if the following would be ok

i would be planning on running a spur from the house to the summer house, inside the house it would be a 13amp switched fuse
i would feed this cable outside to an outside junction box, where I would then use 2.5mm black rubber cable, the cable would be over 6 foot from the ground, I would connect this use m20 glands to the junction box, then run the cable to the summer house, the run is about 15 metres ????
on getting to the summer house I would then put another junction box on the outside, feed the cable into the summerhouse from inside the junction box, at this stage I would swap to 2.5 twin and earth
from this junction box I would Connect the cable to a rcd switched fuse, from there I would run the cable inside the summer house using round condit, this would feed 2 double sockets and 1 heater
does this sound ok or am I way of the mark

ps sorry for going on

So you approach a professional electricians forum and ask us to tell you how to do this, when a "spark" has quoted.

So come on then, how much did he quote and to do what?

If only jobs were as easy as you made them sound, theres so many other factors involved its unbelievable.

Get another spark - or two in and then compare the 3quotes, you'll soon see if one is ripping you off. Don't be so tight, spend the dosh and have it done properly.

Heard it all now, would you swap your own boiler or build your own house for god's sake why does every tom dick and harry think they can become electricians over night, makes my blood boil.

well if this thread lasts any length of time, i think the OP won't get much in the way of advice on how to do the job.
however
since this is in the DIY section and we are obliged to give sensible advice and not mock, here is my input-

follow marks advice and get at least another 2 sparks round to quote you. once you have at least 3, then you will know if you are being fleeced (unlikely anyway if they are decent and reputable. contrary to popular belief, not all tradesmen are out to rip off their customers)
then
once you have your 3 quotes, you could try and play them off against one another to see if it brings their price down (tin hat firmly on for that!)
thennnn
once you have done all that, get the price down even more by offering to do the hard work of digging a trench for your SWA (because if you want to do a proper job, this is what will be used)
but
if the cable is to be clipped to wherever above ground, then just accept their price and let them get on with it safe in the knowledge that everything is A ok and tested etc.

hope this helps

This is a DIY question in the DIY forum so please either point him in the right direction, highlight where there's a hazard or just walk away.

Thanks.

Dan I get your point and it was not about mocking the op but come on I am sick of our trade being treated like this people must think we go through endless courses and books for the fun of it

Haha, so true. I can hear all the Electrical Trainee's pointing and laughing at us, saying "haha look at them silly ****s, 5years haha"

I think people must think we enjoyed the apprentership, being made teaboys for at least 6months and getting fingered in absolutley every scenario for the sh1ts and giggles.

Marvo you have a point I did forget for a second I was in the diy section. To the op sorry for going off like a drill sergeant at you, but if you had to go through what all the guys on here go through, exams, books, tools, public liability, van and van costs, tax, ni, workwear, tools and the list goes on, this lot don't come cheap. but again apologies for going off about it

I have been quoted to run 2.5mm twin and earth cable in trunking along a brick wall down the fence to the summer house, where he will just loop the cables to the items I want.
now I thought my way was better than what he said he could do, but clearly I was wrong
and the ÂŁ460 price quoted I thought was just silly, and to answer a question yes I would change my boiler as I am a heating engineer, will see about more quotes

ÂŁ460 is cheappp! but then again, that's only for t+e. get at least another 2 quotes and see where you are then.
and just fyi- t+e ain't the way to go, a new radial circuit would be best, and cheapest doesn't always mean best as I'm sure you are aware...

Anthony the point about changing boiler was an example as im sure you knew, however you have highlighted a good point in your statement about being a heating engineer/ I am not one so how would you feel if everyone started swapping their own boilers im guessing you wouldn't like it. ps that's not a dig but merely food for thought
