ok so what IP rating would be suitable for a bathroom? and I am just gonna have to go with the existing holes hopefully they will be enough distance apart from the joists i think they should be ok. and as for insulation all that has been removed at a previous date. woudl you stil recommend installing fire hoods?

Whats above them in a loft ? if its a boarded loft then fire hoods will hold a lot of heat back, and they can go under the boards, if its all open up there there is no need for fire hoods as the heat will vent away. I am unsure if fire hoods are a regulation.,You could always install led bulbs though, about ÂŁ30 each, due for another look at prices as may of come down by now.

in truth it was a complete mess. its my parents house and have asked me to re-do them for practice. all the dowlights have a wire coming from them back to a bundle of connector blocks where the feed and switch wire were taken to. even as an appreitce i know this isnt correct commen sense would tell you that.
oh sparky ben you will see worse, much much worse

Sounds like you should rip it all out and start again from the fixed wiring. loop to a choc box for each d/l use wago connectors in each choc box, install fire rated down lighters - no requirement for fire hoods if using fire rated D/L

i have ripped it all out ready to go. I did that today after colege all that is left is the switch wire and feed from a bedroom light fitting. Yes it is a open space and not boarded. So it seems fire rated downlights is the way forward and then see what is required regarding cbale and junction boxes etc wether they have them built on already.

Final question mains or low voltage?

If your buying L/V buy decent trannies, they will come pre wired, if you have'nt got an account with a wholesaler try ( shouldnt mention the name on this forum ) - wait for flack - Screwfix.

IP rated downlighters have a glass screen in front of the bulb, and a rubber seal. Just done the van looking for a old box with the rating on cant find one think its 65.
Mains or Low voltage-up to you. mains will be cheaper to but as doesnt involve a transformer. If you find a good whosaler, they will give you lots of brill advice tomorrow and will take you under their wing as you are a future customer. You may be baffled with choice if you go in to one of those horrendous places like............ & q.
Quick tip, make a note of the hole size the old ones came out of, may save you alot of trouble with a pad saw !!l

Fire rated fittings are not strictly required providing the ceiling is not separating two fire compartments.

E.G. integrated garage with room above.

I still fit them regardless.

Most FR fittings have a built in acoustic barrier.

Yes I have thought about that problem already so I am gonna take an old fitting with me to match up. I am just tryin to sort the problems I might have first so when I come o sort it at the weekend I am ready with out a hitch.

Right sorry if this is a repost but cant be arsed to read all these posts - if the downlighters are SELV theres no need for a CPC so just terminate it in the JB if theres a point or otherwise safely.
