Hi have just been doing a periodic in a house and noticed that the shower cable comes out of the floor boards then is clipped direct to the bathroom wall under the bath before disappearing up the wall to a pullcord Is this OK?it has screws securing the side panel so.im.assuming its ok as its out of the zones!

The inspector carrying out the inspection and testing of any electrical installation must, as appropriate to his or her function, have a sound knowledge and experience relevant to the nature of the installation being inspected and tested, and of BS 7671 and other relevant technical standards. The inspector must also be fully versed in the inspection and testing procedures and employ suitable test equipment during the inspection and testing process.

Aidley, I have two questions for you:

1. Would you concur with the above statement?
2. If so, why, when you have to ask such a question, are you carrying out a periodic inspection for a paying customer?

There is more than one zone to consider here. Perhaps you should give your assessment of the points you raise....??

he asked a valid question.. isnt this what the forum is about ?. i dont think his question makes him inexperienced or incompetent.

I never said he's inexperienced or incompetent, I asked whether he's experienced enough to be carrying out periodic inspections for paying customers if he has to ask about cables under a bath tub. It is very basic knowledge this. Read what I said again and tell me if YOU think the OP has a sound knowledge of BS 7671 and is fully versed in inspection and testing procedures based on the question he/she asked.

I know plenty of brilliant sparks who would not be competent inspectors.

Just to defend myself I have been an industrial/commercial electrician for 20 years where almost every cable is obviously enclosed or wired in swa.In October I got a.job working for a housing association and was unsure about actual cables as I could only see information about the equipment and enclosures. I assumed it was ok so didnt comment on it but was hoping this would be a.friendly forum to get me upto.speed with domestic issues! I do.agree though that maybe my knowledge is lacking in areas but atleast im willing to admit I dont know everything and if im unsure I.will ask people.who know!

You don't have to defend yourself, but if you are carrying out periodics it is your responsibility to have sound knowledge and experience relevant to the installation you are T&I'ing. This does mean getting up to speed with things before you carry out the work.

I wasn't having a go mate, but clearly your knowledge is lacking in areas more relevant to domestic installations compared to industrial ones. I'd highly suggest you spend a bit of time learning the requirements of 701 by rote.

No worries pal in an ideal world they wouldn't put me on them but have a lot of old boys going on the sick so there stretched! Not ideal and I completely agree with you! Are there any good books on the market that specialise in domestic so I dont have to trawl through the entire book

Yes, the Part P doctor by Alan Lynch is one I would highly recommend. It deals purely with domestic installations, contains lots of pictures and is very informative. It also busts a hell of a lot myths and old wives tales.

It's ideally suited for the domestic apprentice or five week wonder, but I think someone like yourself could make good use of it too.
